Wouldn’t it be great if everyone who came to your website signed up for your list? Well, maybe not. After all, not everyone who visits your website is a good prospect for your products or services. But you can convert more of those who are a good match by employing a few of these tips… Here are 13 tips for capturing more opt-ins from your website.

  1. Offer a freebie. Yes, this is the one we know and use – reports, ebooks, guides, whitepapers, etc. – can make good enticements to join your list. Rule of thumb – your freebie should be something that your ideal prospect would be willing to PAY for. This will help create the highest conversion possible.
  1. Advertise that freebie. A lot. Placing a sign up box on the right side of your web page is good – placing a second one at the bottom of each article is even better. Using a pop-up or slide-in? Delay the timing so the visitor has a chance to view your website and get a feel for whether they’re interested in what you have to say.
  1. Coupons, discounts, special offers. You can use this solo or in conjunction with your freebie. For example, if your website sells printers, your freebie might be, “10 Mistakes Most People Will Make When Buying Their Next Printer” along with a 15% discount on their first order, just for joining your list.
  1. Loyalty programs. Rather than a one time discount or coupon, you might offer them a lifetime discount on all orders when they sign up to receive your updates and offers.
  1. Creative sign up forms. Experiment with making your sign-up form uniquely yours, written in your voice. Be conversational and inviting – like you’re asking your friend to pop around for a cold beer rather than formally asking someone to marry you.
  1. Short forms. Tests show that asking for just an email address tends to convert higher than asking for a name and email address. And the more fields visitors have to fill out, the lower your conversions. Of course you’ll want to test this on your own website.
  1. Offer to send them a compelling podcast. “Want to hear Brandon’s 6 Secrets to Orgasmic Backyard BBQ Grilling? This podcast is exclusively for subscribers – listen to it anytime on your computer or mp3 player.”
  1. Offer a bonus. “Get a free ___ when you place your first order. Sign up and we’ll send you the special code to get this $14.99 bonus, while they last.”
  1. Free course. “Free 30 day course shows you step-by-step how to create a steady, $200 per day affiliate income.”
  1. Offer a free demo or trial version. This will depend on what kind of product you’re offering. If it’s software, the 30 day free trial sells millions of dollars worth of product. If it’s an info product, you might give away the first 2 chapters or videos. If it’s an online service such as a dating site, give away the first week to 30 days.
  1. Try a test, assessment or quiz. “Do you know which of these 5 headlines out pulled the others by a 2:1 margin?” Give them a challenge and a chance to see if they’re as smart as you, while learning something in the process. And of course they receive the answers to the quiz when they submit their email address.
  1. Membership. Have content on your website that can only be accessed by members, and then make it super simple to become a member for free.
  1. Offer webinars. Much like the podcast, the webinar is a chance to showcase your talents, educate your prospect and capture their information.
